Author Liz DeJesus has stopped by with an interview for the First Frost Blog Tour
1. How would you describe First Frost in one sentence?
Bianca Frost works in a fairy tale themed museum and finds out the hard way that fairy tales are in fact real.
2. There are several fairy tales and its magical items incorporated into First Frost. I personally like the brick house from the third little pig. That is one useful item on Bianca’s journey. Which one of the fairytale/magical item is your favorite and why?
Ooooh, that’s a good question. Well out of the items that Bianca takes with her to Everafter the most useful is the brick house. But my absolute favorite? Red Riding Hood’s cape.
3. What’s your favorite quote in First Frost?
I don’t know if I could choose one single sentence that’s my absolute favorite. I do love writing for Bianca and Ming, they have such great and natural back and forth that I have fun writing their scenes together. This is one of my favorites:
“That was twenty different kinds of creepy, B.”
“You say that a lot. Are you sure there are twenty different kinds, Ming?”
“Yep.”
“You’re going to have to list them for me one of these days,” Bianca said.
“I can do that right now.”
“You really don’t have to.”
“I’m going to prove my point once and for all.”
Bianca groaned.
“There’s creepy, obviously, quickly followed by kooky, spooky, mysterious, ookey,” Ming said.
Bianca raised her hand and interrupted her by saying, “That’s the beginning of The Addams Family song.”
“Those words still make my list,” Ming argued. “Sinister, eerie, weird, strange, abnormal, uncanny, frightening, odd, scary, unnerving, chilling, unsettling, disturbing, bizarre, and abominable.”
Bianca blinked several times and waited for Ming to say something else.
“Are you officially finished?” she asked.
“I am,” Ming replied, looking really pleased with herself. “You know it took me weeks to memorize all of those words in case I needed to list them someday.”
“So that’s what you do with your spare time?”
“Oh, shut up.” Ming stuck her tongue out and gave Bianca a raspberry.
4. What’s your favorite part of writing First Frost?
Being able to combine two of my favorite things, writing and fairy tales and put them in one single place. I wish people knew just how much fun I’m having writing this series (yes, there are more books to follow…almost finished with the sequel).
5. Were there any challenges you faced while writing First Frost?
Just finding the time to write. I’m currently a stay at home mom, I have a three year old son and an eleven month old little boy. And between changing diapers, making sure everyone is fed, doing the laundry, washing dishes, cooking dinner, etc (if you’re a mommy then you know exactly what I’m talking about) it’s very hard for me to find time to write. Some days I just have to ignore the fact that the house is a wreck and write while my kids are napping in the afternoon. I just wish there were more hours in the day. LOL.
6. Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I wish I did outlines. It seems like such an organized thing to do. But unfortunately I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kinda gal. I do have some idea where the story is going to go and I have a clear idea of how some scenes are going to play themselves out but that’s what the first draft is for. I just jot down the first thing that pops into my head and then the second draft is figuring out how my characters are going to get to that moment in the story. The third draft is to polish my writing, check for spelling and grammatical errors and add better descriptions to certain settings.
7. Where is your favorite writing spot?
My favorite place to write was Borders, but now their closed so I have to find a new favorite place to write. :/ I’m trying out Panera and that seems to work just fine for me. But honestly? Anywhere that’s quiet and sells some sort of caffeinated drink is good enough for me.
8. What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing I’m usually chasing after my kids. But I love to read, make collages, and take pictures of nature (flowers, trees, that sort of thing).
9. Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I’m currently working on a novel titled Glass Frost and it’s the sequel to First Frost. It starts where the first book ends. This book revolves around Cinderella’s glass slipper, you also find out what happened to the Seven Dwarves after Snow White married the prince. Some other fairy tales that are mixed into this book are The Frog Prince and Toads and Diamonds. Bianca also visits the fairy realm and meets Queen Titania. Yeah, things get very dicey and complicated for Bianca this time around. There are a whole bunch of unexpected surprises. I’m almost finished, I just have to figure out the ending.
